Mokelumne City

September 6, 2020 History Nature Travel

Now a ghost town, Mokelumne City was once a rising center of trade in San Joaquin County (CA) – second only to Stockton. Due to its location on the Mokelumne and Cosumnes Rivers, the city could provide deepwater shipping to San Francisco year-round.

Its location and extreme weather events conspired to wipe out the city in the Great Flood of 1862, just a dozen years after the city was founded. Though there isn’t much left compared to other more famous ghost towns, I’d like to visit the site of Mokelumne City the next time I am in the area (north-west of Lodi).

I first heard about Mokelumne City in the “I Love You, California” podcast.
